Afgelopen vrijdag had ik het voorrecht iets bijzon

Afgelopen vrijdag had ik het voorrecht iets bijzonders te doen met de buurvrouw. Buurvrouw W is terminaal ziek en uitbehandeld. Maar ze had nog nooit een motorrit gemaakt en wilde dat wel een keer doen en als herinnering meenemen.

Dapper als ze is, en met een beetje hulp met op- en afstijgen (er is niet veel kracht of uithoudingsvermogen meer over), is ze achterop gegaan en hebben we met prachtig weer een ritje gemaakt door de Kennemerlandse omgeving: strand, bos, duinen, het Spaarne.

Ondertussen hebben we heerlijk zitten keuvelen over lichte én zware onderwerpen en tussendoor fijn gelunched met haar echtgenoot en @mlm0874 .

Het was fijn, verbindend en bijzonder om te mogen doen en een toffe herinnering aan (en met) iemand die er binnenkort misschien niet meer is.

A year ago today, I reached the respectable age of half a century and asked the people around me for something different as a gift: experiences and memories. I received just that, and more. The year has flown by, and I've done many new things, together with—or inspired by—the wonderful people around me, or simply because they were on my bucket list.

I've baked a cake, received life advice, taken a solo motorcycle trip, traveled to Egypt with my beloved @mlm0874 and the kids, dined out with my aunts, gone on a hot air balloon ride, taken a motorcycle trip with an old friend, enjoyed a fantasy-themed dinner with my D&D group, experienced indoor skydiving, visited the Hanseatic Days in Maasbommel, had my eyelids lifted, laughed, danced, sung, and cried.

People have cooked for me, I’ve watched movies with old friends, and spent a day driving a convertible. I’ve cast my own dice, received old photos and memories, and I'm sure I've forgotten quite a few things—sorry about that.

And I'm not done yet! I still have golf to learn, more dinners to look forward to, cycling and mountain biking trips, Warhammer games, and much more—so the fun has already lasted more than a year ❤.

Of course, it wasn't all sunshine and roses: this past year, I was diagnosed with ASD and ADHD (which, ultimately, also has brought clarity and understanding), and I lost my job.

But the positive far outweighs the negative. I am healthy and I know love. I am a rich and happy person.

After a disappointment in 2023, this year Haarlem organized a proper Veterans Day, with the promise that next year would be grander. It was great to see the acknowledgement of the Veterans here, though it was too busy and hot and noisy for me - so I had to leave early. Day 2 in Northrine-Westfalen. We visited Xanten, a very pretty and history town. First we did a tour of the townd and visited the hidden but beautiful ‘StiftsMuseum’. Then the Cathedral, also rebuilt after WW2. And of course we could not skip a visit to the Xanten Archeological Centre, a huge excavation site of the Roman era. #xanten
